![In the fourth period AP Calculus BC class at Palo Alto High School, senior Crystal Li places her phone in the “phone jail.” Starting July 2026, this may become a normal procedure across schools in California thanks to Governor Gavin Newsom signing the Phone-Free School Act into law last week. According to Li, there are often unnecessary complications that come with enforcing phone restrictions. "It becomes a hassle putting it [a phone] in [the phone jail] before class, and taking it out after class," Li said. ![Following three years as Student Activities Director, Palo Alto High School teacher Steven Gallagher is stepping down from the position and will be helping current dance teacher Alyssa Bond to step into the position. According to Gallagher, he enjoyed the collaborative aspect as well as seeing students grow throughout the process. “I really liked working with all students in this type of atmosphere as opposed to an academic atmosphere,” Gallagher said. “That was really rewarding, especially after Spirit Week, when a lot of the students were like ‘I don't know how we're going to do this [plan Spirit Week],’ and then at the end, they end up doing it successfully.”](https://palyvoice.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/364A6531-1200x800.jpg)

![Students took pride in sharing their cultures during last year's International Night, hosted by Palo Alto High School's Associated Student Body. This year's International Night, this time arranged by Paly's theater program, will take place at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Performing Arts Center. According to senior Athya Paramesh, who organized the event, students are welcome to participate either as a performer or an attendee. "We wanted it to be open to people from theater, but also beyond theater," Paramesh said. ![Looking up from her laptop to smile at a student, Palo Alto High School science teacher Elizabeth Brimhall has faced a rough struggle with her mental health over the past few years.
