Winter Rally to bring student-vs-staff basketball game, Prom reveal

Students are expressing excitement to attend Palo Alto High School’s annual Winter Rally during extended lunch tomorrow in the Big Gym.

According to Associated Student Body President Julian Hong, the rally will feature a student-vs-staff basketball game and reveal the upcoming Prom date, location and theme. The student rosters for the game were released in ASB’s Instagram post.

Students and staff battle for the ball in the students-vs-staff basketball game during the 2023 Winter Rally game. According to Julian Hong, Associated Student Body president, ASB will be stricter with the rules for this year’s basketball game. “During the [student-vs-] staff basketball game last year, there was some confusion,” Hong said. “[We] are trying to cut down on that for this year so everything goes a lot smoother.” (Photo: Daniel Garepis-Holland)
Sophomore Jose Pinto Saldana said he welcomes the opportunity to watch a fun game between the students and staff.

“I think it [the rally] is very exciting and fun,” Saldana said. “It gets students away from school, and they get to compete with their teachers.”

According to Hong, ASB will be changing the way the Prom information is revealed this year.

“In the past two years, we’ve released it [the Prom location] after the end of the basketball game,” Hong said. “This time, we’re doing it at halftime because we had trouble last year where a lot of students left immediately after the staff basketball game. We’re working with InFocus to release teasers of the Prom reveal video in the week leading up to it.”

Hong said students should look forward to this year’s Prom location choice.

“I’m most excited about the Prom reveal video because we spent a long time planning it,” Hong said. “The location is a bit of a change from the past, but it’s very exciting, and ASB has been working on choosing decorations, tablecloth colors and what amenities will be available during Prom.”

According to junior Maya Dakua, she is excited to find out more information about Prom.

“I probably will go to the rally, because I want to see the new Prom location,” Dakua said. “I feel like it’s an event I have been waiting for since freshman year.”

Dakua said she appreciated that the extended lunch period could also benefit students who chose not to attend the rally.

“It’s nice that we have a long lunch,” Dakua said. “People like to spend that time doing extra things like studying or going to Town and Country. Basketball is not for everybody, so I think it’s a win-win.”

Hong said he wishes for a high student turnout to cheer on the basketball game and Prom reveal.

“I highly encourage all students to show up in order to give their support to the seniors-vs-staff game, but also so they can find out where Prom is,” Hong said.
