Athletes look forward to playoffs after SCVAL decision reversal

Senior forward Martin Segura leaps for the ball during the tip-off during the Vikings’ home game against Santa Clara High School on Saturday. The Vikings won 38-35 after the Bruins nearly took the lead in the final minute of the game. While Paly’s offense was strong in the first half, they only scored 11 points across the third and fourth quarters. According to Segura, the Vikings hope to improve upon their mistakes in future games. “I think our offense, we can be a little more patient,” Segura said. “We can get better shots, and we can play for each other a little more.”

Like many small businesses, the locally famous restaurant has been struggling financially during the pandemic. To help protect the restaurant, Palo Alto High School graduate Olvia Koyama created an online fundraiser in honor of mother. “The Creamery has remained a place that really makes Palo Alto feel like home,” Koyama stated in an email.

Athletic Director Nelson Gifford discusses the future of high school sports after preseason training was suspended. While the release of updated guidance from the state has been delayed until at least Jan. 1, Gifford said he is hopeful about the eventual release of a plan outlining returning to play. “If they had guidance, that means they had a plan to restart youth sports,” Gifford said. “If they had a plan then that plan still exists. That plan might change, but we hope they’re going to release that plan sooner rather than later.”

The Vikings won the rivalry game, 49-35, by playing an exceptionally strong defense, shutting down Los Gatos’ scoring opportunities. “I thought our strongest point was defense, and one of the things we wanted to do was limit their three point shooters, they have a few guys who are very, very good shooters,” Head Coach Jeff LaMere said. “So one of our points of emphasis was to limit their opportunities … and they did a really wonderful job with that.”
