ASB brings African drummers to Quad tomorrow

Paly ASB hosts the African Drum and Dance Troupe at lunch tomorrow on the Quad. The ensemble “will combine African drumming, dancing, acrobatics, stilt-walking, breathtaking costumes, and innovative choreography,” according to its website.  Photo by Allison Cowie.

The African Dance and Drum Troupe, hosted by Palo Alto High School’s Associated Student Body, will be putting on a show at lunch tomorrow on the Quad.

According to ASB Multicultural Representative Israa Beig, the four-person dance and drum assembly “will perform a dance from their homeland of Senegal that will represent their culture and traditions.”

Beig is excited to give the opportunity for the Paly community to embrace its diversity.

“As the Multicultural Representative, I felt as a whole school we should celebrate our differences and diversity and this is just one method of accomplishing that goal,” Beig said.

The group’s stop at Paly is one of many across the Bay Area.

“The African Drum and Dance Troupe actually contacted [Principal] Mr. [Phil] Winston first,” Beig said. “The troupe was planned for this week because this was the only week when they would be able to come and perform since they are also performing at other schools in the Bay Area.”

“I hope the student body embraces this experience and their reaction to the the troupe is a positive one,” Beig added.  “I believe this performance will attract a large audience since it’s something new and different.”

The location of the performance may change due to rain.  Stay tuned for updates.
