Looking up from her laptop to smile at a student, Palo Alto High School science teacher Elizabeth Brimhall has faced a rough struggle with her mental health over the past few years. According to Brimhall, this experience has taught her to empathize more strongly with others going through a similar situation. “When my thoughts are going really quickly, I have to remember to slow down and take time to listen to my students,” Brimhall said. “Before I experienced it [mental health issues] myself, I had so many friends and family members that had struggled with mental health that I think I already had empathy for students, but now having experienced [it] myself even more so.” (Photo: Kristine Lin)

New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Joanna Ho speaks to Palo Alto High School students about her young adult book The Silence that Binds Us during PRIME on Wednesday in the library. According to Ho, who graduated from Paly in 2000, she included many of her high school and cultural experiences in her book. Former English teacher and district parent Shana Segal is running for the Palo Alto Board of Education in this falls election cycle. Segal, also a PAUSD graduate, lists transparency and greater mental health resources as her top priorities. As part of the Palo Alto High School Associated Student Body’s effort to promote student mental health amid prolonged stressful circumstances, students will engage in daily mental health challenges throughout the upcoming Wellness Week from March 22 to 26. According to ASB Clubs Commissioner Johannah Seah, Wellness Week will provide students with the opportunity to learn about managing their mental health and integrate helpful practices into their lives. “I thought it would be a great idea, especially since Paly is a very stressful environment,” Seah said. “I think knowing more about the wellness resources and how we can be advocates for ourselves is a really good tool for students.” Graphic: Kabir Advani

ASB Wellness Week to educate students on mental health

Shifting locations during COVID-19, the Palo Alto High School Wellness Center has quickly adapted to new spaces — both physical and virtual. Wellness Outreach Officer Whitney Aquino said that although the Wellness Center staff is unable to check on students in the same way they normally would, they are offering resources to ensure that students feel supported. [Previously] theyre taking a break in class and then you can say, Do you want to talk to someone? and they might end up opening up ... versus when were online, folks can just take a break in their own homes, she said.
