Young adult novelist to speak on professional writing

A New York Times best-selling author will speak to Palo Alto High School students during lunch tomorrow in the English Resource Center.

Simone Elkeles, a young adult novelist best known for her teen romance “Perfect Chemistry” trilogy, will touch on subjects ranging from her professional career to the writing process in general, according to Paly librarian Rachel Kellerman.

Kellerman was the one who first reached out to the author and invited her to speak, hoping that students would gain valuable insight from Elkeles about writing.

“I always try to find forums for published authors to speak to students as this is a great opportunity for students to learn about the writing process from a professional,” Kellerman said.

Earlier this month, Elkele released the first book, “Wild Cards”, of her new series, also called Wild Cards. Kellerman says that in addition to speaking, Elkeles will also be signing books on Friday.

“They [students] can purchase a book and have it signed the day of the event,” Kellerman said.

According to her website, Elkeles will be making the next stop on her Wild Cards’ Tour at 2 p.m. this Sunday at Kepler’s Books in Menlo Park.

In the future, Kellerman wants guest speakers like Elkeles to continue to make appearances at Paly.

“I try to have an author come and visit once a semester,” Kellerman said. “Second semester we will have a Science Fiction author come and speak at our first TEDx Feb. 24.”
