“Last Friday Night” by Katy Perry blared as Palo Alto High School students tossed cornhole bags, spiked volleyballs, and gathered with friends during lunch Friday on the Quad.
Paly Play Day is a lunchtime event where students, particularly seniors, can bond, play sports like volleyball and spend quality time with their friends during an hour-long extended lunchtime.
According to Associated Student Body Activities Director Alyssa Bond, the event aims to bring Paly students together one final time before summer break.
“I just want them to have one final chance to come together with their buddies,” Bond said. “To be able to do something fun during the final weeks of school, and walk away having a nice time together with a friend.”
Senior ASB social commissioner Savannah Taylor said ASB decided to bring a new sport this year for students to enjoy.
“We added tetherball this year,” Taylor said. “It’s such a niche and unique sport, and we brought it to Paly for all the students to enjoy on this miraculous day.”
According to Taylor, her favorite part of Paly Play Day is seeing people connect through fun games.
“My favorite activity has to be volleyball, because there’s so much intensity and love for the game,” Taylor said. “Seeing everybody play sports together that usually don’t hang out is really exciting.”
Senior Alexander Fersman said playing volleyball with his friends on the quad is among his absolute favorite moments of the event.
“I’m loving it,” Fersman said. “It’s great to have the senior class out here all bonding. The volleyball is really fun, I wish we could have more of that [during the school year]. It was here earlier during the year and it’s always a lot of fun.”
