Silver-haired seniors and freshmen with pacifiers threw themselves to the ground as inflatable sleds passed across their backs. Heels clicked as juniors in business-wear with balloons sandwiched between them waddled forward as the sophomores trailed behind them in leather jackets.
These surreal sights filled Palo Alto High School’s Peery Family Center at lunch today during the fourth Spirit Week rally.
Associated Student Body Spirit Commissioner Arabella Guinle expressed excitement to have students play the funky games.
“I’m really looking forward to our games,” Guinle said. “Tyler [ASB Spirit Commissioner] and I have been working really hard on Spirit Week ever since May. I really hope our hard work pays off and everyone really enjoys [the rally] today, and I’m looking forward to Rapid Relay.”
The first game, Rapid River relay race, involved to an inflatable raft carrying a student using the momentum of peers to push it forward as a makeshift conveyor belt. The initial game between freshmen and seniors was so close it was declared a tie, but the rematch led to a decisive freshmen victory. Ultimately, the juniors pulled out a close win against the freshmen, cementing a junior victory in the first game.
The second game was called Slither.io, with a train of students completing a relay while pinning balloons between each other. The freshmen claimed their victory.
According to freshman Albert Cernihorsky, he has gone to every rally so far and recommends it to everyone.
“The energy and the excitement is what keeps me coming back,” Cernihorsky said. “Today, I’m looking forward to the freshmen winning.”
The happy energy followed the students as they left for class. Sophomore Sofia Rodriguez said that she feels that the positivity makes her more connected with the school.
“Everyone is really hyped up, and we’ve all been screaming at each other the whole time,” Rodriguez said. “It’s pretty competitive, but I enjoy all of the energy and positivity that you get when everyone is together.”
The new Spirit Week scoreboard is as follows:
19,700 pts for seniors
16,700 pts for juniors
14,800 pts for sophomores
