BREAKING: Santa Clara schools extends closures to May 1
March 25, 2020
Santa Clara County schools will remain closed until May 1 to help stop the spread of COVID-19, a press release from the county Office of Education announced today.
Santa Clara County issued the order in conjunction with five other Bay Area school districts and county education offices, which will also extend school closures until May 1. The five other offices are Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Marin County, San Francisco Unified School District and San Mateo County.
“The regional connections across our most populous counties in the Bay Area require a coordinated approach,” the press release stated. “County Offices of Education will continue to work in close partnership with local health departments and local school districts to support the children, parents, and essential workforce of the Bay Area.”
The closure announcement comes as Palo Alto Unified School District schools were initially scheduled to reopen April 13, after spring break.

![Shounak Dharap, president of the school board of Palo Alto Unified School District, announced Friday morning that Superintendent Don Austin separated from his superintendent position at PAUSD. Corbin Dodd, an Ethnic Studies and AP Seminar teacher at Palo Alto High School, said that Austin's separation from the district surprised him and his colleagues. "Negotiations are happening right now, so there's a lot of talk about the school board and the superintendent, but it [Austin's separation] wasn't on my radar, and I don't think it was on the radar of any of the teachers I've spoken to," Dodd said.](https://palyvoice.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/IMG_7950-300x225.png)
