The sports career pathway is hosting a series of community speakers to talk about their sports-oriented careers during fourth period in the Media Arts Center at Palo Alto High School throughout the rest of the school year.
The Sports Career Speaker Series is a way for students to explore sports careers and the pathways to get involved with each, according to teacher Theresa McDermott, who runs the program.
All of the speakers work in the Bay Area in sports-related fields. The line-up for the upcoming presentations includes Sidney Griffin, Kate Scott, Keena Turner, Al Guido, Lisa Green and Chris Gaines. Their careers range from a physical therapist to the president of the San Francisco 49ers.
“They have all built incredible careers and they want to give back to the community by visiting our students and sharing the lessons that they have learned along the way,” McDermott said.
The goal of the Getting into the Game class is to help students learn more about potential careers in sports and find a mentor or internship opportunity, according to McDermott.
The speakers share their own experiences to give students an idea of what working in their field is like.
“Guest speakers bring the wealth of their experience to share with our students,” McDermott said. “They share their personal story, usually telling us about what inspired them to excel in their own life, as well as the various paths that they took in their educational and professional journeys.”
