The Palo Alto High School girls’ soccer team (4-0) dominated crosstown rival Gunn (1-3) in a 4-0 match that picked up in the second half on Thursday.

The Vikes made several good attempts on goal but were only up by 1 at the half.

Junior center back Reilly Filter was finally able to break through with a goal off of a corner towards the end of the half.

Filter would go on to score again in the second half along with senior midfielder Jacey Pederson and sophomore defender Ally Scheve. With several more successful attacks and almost total control of the ball, the Vikings dominated the second half scoring three times.

Paly assistant coach Kelly Jenks said that the team played better in the second half due to better communication and connections between the players.

“I thought it was a solid performance,” Jenks said. “We weren’t as connected as were in the last game against MA [Menlo-Atherton], but towards the second half we started to play to feet more which helped.”

Despite winning 4-0, junior midfielder Natalie Maloney feels the Vikings could have played better.

“We definitely could have played better against Gunn but we still ended up with a good score,” Maloney said. “It took us a while to get into the game and find our rhythm, but after the first half we found it.”

Head coach Kurt Devlin believes the team has the potential to do well this season.

“The team expectations would be to at least vie for the championship again,” Devlin said. “The girls are good enough to get there, if we have a little bit of luck as well we should get to that point again.”
