The Palo Alto High School track and field meet against the cross-town rival Gunn High School on Thursday ended with a 82-45 Paly boys’ team (2-0) victory and a 74-52 loss for the Paly girls (1-1).
The boys dominated the meet, beating the Gunn boys’ team (0-2) in almost all of the meet’s events. While the girls’ team placed first in relays, long jump and triple jump, the Gunn girls’ team (1-1) won the rest of the events.
Despite the mixed results, senior captain Anna Dukovic said she felt the teams performed well, especially since it was only the second meet of the season.
“Gunn is a really tough opponent, and they have a lot of great athletes,” Dukovic said. “Going into the meet, we knew that Gunn had a strong girls’ team, and I think we did a good job focusing on what we could control. It’s still the beginning of the season, so I think that we have a lot of potential to improve.”
A number of track and field members will attend the Saint Francis High School Invitational meet tomorrow. According to Dukovic, the teams view the invitational as an opportunity to prepare for the rest of the season.
“Every time we get on the track, we try to beat our personal records, so we have to treat tomorrow as any other day on the track,” Dukovic said. “It’s always fun getting to race against schools that aren’t in our league, and it’s great practice for the end of the season when we might race some of these athletes again.”
