Liveblog: Girls soccer takes on Menlo-Atherton

The Palo Alto High School girls varsity soccer team will take on the Menlo-Atherton Bears at 4 p.m. today on the Vikings’ home turf. The following is a liveblog of the game.

5:34 – A whistle is blown, ending the game. The final score is 2-1, resulting in a loss for the Lady Vikes.

5:33 – Foug attempts a last-second shot on goal, but is blocked by the goalie.

5:33 – Musil runs back towards the Paly goal, catching up with a Menlo-Atherton player who is making a run. Musil passes to Foug.

5:29 – Musil takes a free kick with five minutes remaining in the game.

5:26 – Paly junior defense Paige Bara goes in for Maloney.

5:20 – Senior Menlo-Atherton midfielder Cayla Stillman is fouled within the penalty box and is awarded a direct penalty kick. The ball sails into the corner of the net. The Bears now lead 2-1.

5:16 – Menlo-Atherton sophomore Kelsey Reed, a forward, takes a free kick close to the Paly goal, but kicks the ball over the net.

5:14 – Paly substitutes freshman Natalie Maloney in for junior Priscilla Bell as a midfielder.

5:08 – Junior midfielder Katie Foug’s shot barely misses the Menlo-Atherton goal. The crowd groans.

5:05 – A player  from Menlo-Atherton trips senior defender Julia Kwasnick just outside the penalty box, resulting in a free kick taken by Sugihara. However, the goalie blocks the kick.

5:01 – Senior forward Sunny Lyu takes a free kick after being tripped by a Menlo-Atherton player.

4:59 – The Bears’ goalie stops another of the Vikings’ shots, this time from senior forward Megan Tall.

4:57 – A shot from junior Aoi Sugihara, a Viking midfielder, is blocked by the Menlo-Atherton goalie. The ball remains largely in the Menlo-Atherton half of the field.

4:55 – Menl0-Atherton kicks off in the second half of the match.

4:42 – Halftime is called. The score is still tied at 1-1.

4:35 – Woodfill shoots at the Menlo-Atherton goal, but the ball is blocked by the Bears’ goalie and bounces back on the playing field. Woodfill shoots again and the ball flies out of bounds.

4:25 – Junior Viking goalie Sarah Lim blocks a Menlo-Atherton shot to the center of the goal.

4:21 – Sophomore Viking forward Nika Woodfill ties up the game at 1-1, sliding the ball past the Menlo-Atherton goalie.

4:18 – Junior Paly defender Olivia Musil takes a free kick, sending the ball to the opposing half of the field.

4:12 – A Menlo-Atherton player scores the first goal of the game, making the score 1-0 for the Bears.

4:02 – Kickoff signals the start of the game.
