Hair raising beats echoed through the streets of Mountain View on Friday as punk teens and orderly grown-ups alike crowd into Shoreline Amphitheater to experience the new genre of music known as dubstep.

 Artists including Eva Simons, Showtek, Doctor P and the Bingo Players performed at the third Identity Festival, one of the first concert tours to promote dubstep artists.

Dubstep features electronic dance music that originated in South London, England, and seems to especially appeal to teens and adults in their early 20s. All Identity festivals typically have three performance stages, with artists showing simultaneously at all three  to accommodate the abundance of DJs.

I arrived at the concert at about 4 p.m., two hours after opening time. The energy was already high, concert-goers clad in neon rainbow tutus and furry boots, rocking out to pounding music. About two dozen Palo Alto high school students chose to venture to Identity to relax after the first couple days of school, and left happy with the event.

“Showtek had an awesome set, and they played a new song which was fantastic,” said junior Shivonne Logan. “It’s about time that dubstep is finally being recognized as a new genre of music.”

Paly junior Kristina Savvateeva also had a fun time.

“The concert was so cool, the artists were great, especially my favorite artist, Excision,” she said. “I look forward to going again next year.”
