All Palo Alto high school students will now have the option to take classes required for graduation during the summer free of cost, according to Principal Phil Winston.
“Any class that a student can get units for is free,” Winston said. “They are working out the details for the few classes that might be considered acceleraton classes.”
Living Skills, a popular summer school course among students, is one of the many classes that will be free of cost.
“We try to do everything possible to remove barriers so students can continue to be successful,” Winston said.
Winston added that the decision was made about a month ago and has been a conversation in the district for a long time.
“There has been a big focus [within the district] on equity and making sure students stay on track, and this was a great opportunity for the district to show that,” Winston said.
The original fee for summer school classes is around $500. Summer school registration for high school students opened today at 8 a.m.
