The Palo Alto High School volleyball team marked major wins today at the High Sierra Classic tournament in Reno.

The Vikings defeated Red Bluff High School in two games (25-7 and 25-13), Truckee High School in two games (25-17 and 25-8) and Roseville in two games (25-18 and 25-10), on the first day of the tournament, according to senior Melanie Wade.

“We definitely did a good job of staying steady the whole day,” Wade said of the Vikings’ performance for the day. “We didn’t make very many errors and put a lot of pressure on the other teams with our serving and passing.”

The Vikings have won the tournament for the  past four years and are seeking to gain another championship this year, Wade said.

“We are definitely aiming to win the whole tournament,” Wade said. “It’s going to come down to how well we play as a team.”

Despite having won the state championship last year, Wade does not expect the tournament to be a walk in the park as the Vikings will face stiff competition from strong teams such as Saint Francis Sacramento.

“It’s still the beginning of the season; we are still working out a couple of things, but [the wins have] helped bring us together as a team.”
