Palo Alto High School junior and standout swimmer Jasmine Tosky has done it again. Tosky rewrote the record books today, setting the national high school record in the 100-yard butterfly at the Central Coast Section Swimming Championship qualifying meet at George F. Haines International Swim Center in Santa Clara.
Tosky’s blazing time of 51.92 seconds was well under her CCS record of 52.77 from last year. The time would have gotten her fifth at the NCAA Division 1 Championships this year. The holder of the old national record of 52.41 was former Stanford swimmer and Olympic gold medalist, Misty Hyman. Tosky also took the first seed in the 200-yard freestyle with a quick time of 1:44.60.
On the boys side, junior Byron Sanborn is set to defend his CCS title in the 100-yard breastroke after posting a blistering qualifying time of 56.47 to qualify first. He was more than a half second faster than the second seed. Freshman phenom Andrew Liang set a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle after leading off the 200-yard freestyle relay in 21.35.
Both Paly teams are positioned well after today’s qualifying round. The girls team is looking for its first CCS title in more than five years and will need strong performances in both relays and individual events to hold off Archbishop Mitty High School and St. Francis High School. The boys are racing for second place, trailing powerhouse Bellarmine College Preparatory which has won an incredible 27 consecutive championships.
CCS Finals will begin at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the same location.
