Palo Alto High School will host a “digital friendship” workshop for parents at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the English Resource Center.
Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet, LCSW and Parents Place Coordinator, and parent educator Patty Page from Common Sense Media will host the workshop, and a panel of Paly student journalists will offer further insight into how social media affects the way teenagers communicate and interact with their friends.
The workshop is the brainchild of Principal Phil Winston. During a chat with several journalism students shortly before spring break, he said that he seeks to engage parents and students in a discussion about the role technology and social networking sites play in students’ lives and how they shape and alter friendship.
“How many of your parents understand what it’s like to live in your world?” he asked at one point. Not many, was the general consensus.
According to Page, the workshop will include small group discussion and opportunities to respond to and reflect on the findings Page and Moskowitz-Sweet will present based on their research.
