Girls' lacrosse heads into new season defending league title

The team ended its season with an overall record of 16-4 and a league record of 10-2 as the SCVAL champion. This season they hope to win leagues again as well as CCS.

After losing 11 seniors to graduation, the team is looking to its underclassmen to make major contributions. The seniors that have graduated include: Julie Dahm, Claire Cooper, Emily Fowler, Keely Haverstock, Lauren Mah, Sam Herzog, Natalie Gauthier, Lauren Traube, Brianna Boyd, Maya Fielder and Mari Wilson.

“We’re working on facilitating the transition to a whole new chemistry on the field,” junior defender Meghan Byrd said. “Although many people think this is a rebuilding year, we’re definitely excited to start playing our games and proving them wrong.”

The Vikings’ main goal is to defend their league title while improving the skills of the younger team members.

“My goals for this upcoming season are to help defend our title and to help everyone succeed,” junior attacker Kimmie Flather said. “Everyone worked together to achieve the common goal of winning SCVAL. We worked really well together and learned to adjust to tough teams. More than anything the camaraderie was great and this year I’m sure it will be even better.”

Head coach Jamie Nesbitt agreed that the team’s main goal is to defend its league title.

“We are shooting for the same goal as last year, which is league champs,” Nesbitt said. “We have a brand new team, and keeping a good record is important.”

Despite the loss of much of its starting roster, the Vikings will rely upon teamwork between returning players to start the season off well.

According to Byrd, some key defenders this year will be senior Gracie Cain, junior Emy Kelty and junior Kirah Ingram, who was a first-year JV player last year. The varsity team will also add freshman attacker Kirsten DeStefano.

Key midfielders are junior Kimmie Flather and sophomore Nina Kelty, while the key attacker is sophomore Charlotte Biffar, according to Byrd.

Last season, the Vikings lost to Menlo High School (12-11), Los Gatos High School (13-12), Burlingame High School (10-4) and St. Francis High School (10-9). This season, the team hopes to overcome those teams for a better record, according to Nesbitt.

The Vikings played their first game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton.
