The staff of Palo Alto High School’s sports magazine, The Viking, will showcase their portfolios during a 7 p.m. reception on March 3, held at the Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto.
The event serves a number of important purposes for the The Viking and Paly sports, according to senior Talia Moyal, who serves as the magazine’s business manager and photographer.
“It’s just a way for us to be involved,” Moyal said. “We wanted to do it [the exhibit] to get The Viking out into the community and show that we support Paly sports.”
The photos, which are already on display at the JCC, include the works of nearly every Viking staff photographer, Moyal said. The exhibit pertains primarily to shots of Paly athletes during competitions, but also includes a few feature photos, according to Moyal.
According to Moyal, the event is not a fundraiser. However, there will be be photos available for purchase.
A large portion of the photos were taken by former Viking photographer Allie Shorin, who graduated from Paly in 2010, according to junior staff writer and photographer Brennan Miller. Miller believes the event rightfully acknowledges the skill and hard work of Viking photographers.
“I am proud of our photographers; they take great photos,” Miller said. “That’s what makes the magazine great, the photos. People wouldn’t read the articles if there wasn’t something to look at.”
Among the photographers whose work will be on display are seniors Alex Kershner, Brandon Dukovic and Talia Moyal, as well as juniors Brennan Miller and Emy Kelty.
Kelty, who covered and took photos of the boys’ water polo team, is excited for the event.
“It’s pretty exciting; I just started taking pictures this year,” Kelty said. “There are really good photographers here at The Viking and it’s really fun to be among them.”
Moyal hopes that the event will be a success.
“We want everybody to come out and see us,” Moyal said.
The event will be held at 7 p.m. on March 3, in the lobby of the JCC.
