This fall, Paly Varsity football has had its best season in 60 years. The team beat Valley Christian High to claim the Central Coast Section Open Division title, capping off a perfect season, and they then went on to seize the state title, conquering the formidable Centennial High School. As the semester closes, students can take a moment to reflect on the magnitude of these accomplishments and commend the players for their dedication and achievement. Paly has been lucky enough to have many superior athletes and talented teams over the years, and football has been no exception. So what has made this season special? What is the secret to 2010 football victory? What were the emotions going into the championship game?
Coach Earl Hansen has been the head coach of varsity football for 23 years and this is his first undefeated season.
“This team is very talented in many ways,” Hansen said. “First, just pure athleticism is very high. But what may separate this team from others is that they are smart and know the game so well.”
Balance on offense, athletic defense, tremendous senior leadership, and overall team speed are the major contributing factors, according to assistant coach Steve Foug. Foug has been with Paly football for 15 years.
Junior wide receiver John Dickerson concurs with Foug.
“I think our team is really fast, and has good depth,” Dickerson said. “Our speed sets us apart.”
Foug also highlighted attributes specific to this years team when looking back on previous seasons.
“Contributions from several players [set’s this team apart],” Foug said. “[They are] very coachable and likable as a group.”
Several players weighed in on their beliefs to the reasons behind Paly’s triumph.
“Everyone knows the role on the team and we don’t have anyone who tries to run the
show,” senior quarterback and team leader Christoph Bono said. “We all work together to and it is a huge part of our success.”
Senior lineman Kevin Anderson agreed and also noticed the team emphasis and effort.
“On this team everyone pulls their weight and works extremely hard,” Anderson said. “Everyone stays after the required to time to get better. Whether it may be watching film, running extra or getting in a workout after a grueling practice, everything gives it their all. For that reason, I think this is one of the best teams Paly has had in a long time, if not ever.”
Senior two way player TJ Braff, who plays safety and tight end and was named CCS defensive player of the year, also views the success as a united effort from all of the players.
“I think that the reason we are so good this year is because we have a lot of great leaders and everyone wants to win,” Braff said. “Even if some people don’t play in the games they work hard in practice to make us better.”
Overall, coaches and players echo the sentiment that a united team effort with exceptional dedication and overall undeniable skill defines Paly football this season.
“Its been magical [the season],” Anderson said. “To have a perfect season, a team needs some luck and we’ve definitely had some. Its been a great season but it wouldn’t be right to end with a loss. We have to go out and take care of business and hopefully we’ll finish Paly’s best season of all time.”
The players themselves are proud of their season and hard work.
“It’s been a great season, I had a lot of fun out there with my teammates,” Bono said. “And as a senior it feels good to be going out on top.”
Hansen is proud of his team and sees the greatness in their performance and effort.
“Going to the state is a very special time for Paly football, and all the students on the team,” Hansen said.
