Administration improves student center

Palo Alto High School students now have access to new improvements in the student center that were recently implemented by the administration.

One of the major changes is to the daily opening time, which has been moved up to 7:30 a.m. to accommodate students who get to school early as the library does not open until 8:00 a.m. according to to Trinity Klein, Teacher on Special Assignment.

“Students come onto campus as early as 7:30 and they don’t really have anywhere to take shelter,” Klein said. “So we wanted to have a space that they could go to be warm and dry and have access to food.”

The old recreational equipment, such as the ping pong, air hockey and Foosball tables have either been repaired or replaced.

“We got rid of all the [recreational equipment] that didn’t work,” Klein said. “We kept a ping pong table and we actually have brand new nets, rackets and balls that are ready to be used.”

The administration added three computers last Friday in the corner of the building for students to use as an alternative to the library, according to Klein.

“We put computers [in so] that students who want to use the student center can come in — full Internet access,” Klein said.

To accompany the new equipment, the administration hired a supervisor to watch over the student center. Additionally, the Associated Student Body has shown interest in the recent changes and could potentially help purchase more furniture for the student center, according to Klein.

“ASB is supporting [having] the student center open in the morning,” Klein said. “They may have some funding maybe for some additional furniture.”

In the future, the student center could receive more improvements such as a Nintendo Wii video game console, but the decision is dependent on student support and usage, according to Klein.

“Right now we just want to see what happens to the usage,” Klein said. “If students use [the student center] a lot, then we’ll invest more money into it.”
