Staff honors retiring head custodian

[[nid:25681]]

Staff gathered at a luncheon on Friday at lunch to celebrate Head Custodian Hok Ky’s nearly 30 years of service to Palo Alto High School. Hok will retire next Friday when the district goes on winter break.

Principal Phil Winston spoke first. His arm around Ky, he said, “Hok is the reason every teacher and support staff wants to be at Paly. He’s unmatched.”

Assistant Principal Jerry Berkson also praised Ky’s service.

“He’s the best,” Berkson said. “I don’t even know what to say about him.”

Ky immigrated to the United States from Cambodia and became an entry level custodian at Paly in 1981. He worked his way up the ranks and earned the position of Custodial Supervisor in 1998. He has held that position for the past 12 years.

Teachers at Paly have had universally positive experiences with Hok and honored him with a standing ovation. Hok received gifts and cards from staff as well as the PTSA.

History teacher Grant Blackburn credited Ky for the excellence of Paly’s custodial staff.

“My wife works at Gunn and the custodians at Gunn aren’t nearly as good as the ones here,” Blackburn said. “That’s because Hok is always on his game.”

Hok, known for his reticence, did not have very much to say at the celebration.

“I just want to thank everyone for being very supportive of me,” Hok said. “From the bottom of my heart.”
