Senior Rachel Capelouto completes a serve against Los Altos during her final set. Capelouto lost two of three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7. – Jeffrey LuThe Palo Alto High School girls’ tennis team lost to Los Altos High School, 1-6, on Thursday at Paly.

Even though the final score seems heavily uneven, senior Rachel Capelouto rallied against her opponent for three lengthy sets, barely losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 on the No. 3 court. The other singles players generally struggled against the Eagles, however, with no close matches.

Senior Mira Khanna had difficulty on the No. 1 singles court, losing 2-6, 3-6. Khanna thinks that overall the match-up was challenging, and she had some confusion about her opponent’s strengths and weaknesses.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect,” Khanna said. “I didn’t really know who I was going to play.”

Khanna feels she needs to work specifically on her finishing shots, which could have helped her succeed.

“I set up points really well,” Khanna said. “But finishing shots were a problem.”

The doubles teams did not fair well against Los Altos either, losing two out of three games. On the No. 1 doubles court, senior Sabrina Yeung and junior Amy Ke endured three sets, losing 6-4, 0-6, 3-6. Senior Margo Gerould and Freshman Felicia Wang brought Paly’s only point on the No. 3 court, winning two matches solidly, 6-1, 6-1.

Overall, the team faced tough opponents and still have room for improvement, according to head coach Andy Harader.

“We were outmatched,” Harader said. “We need to work on putting the ball away in doubles and shot selection in singles.”

The Vikings will play their next game at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Gunn High School at Gunn.
