The Palo Alto High School football team (1-0), has high hopes for the upcoming season after winning its season opener against the Burlingame Panthers, 21-9, on Friday, Sept. 10.
After placing first in the De Anza division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League in 2009-2010 season with a league record of 4-0-2 and an overall record of 7-2-2, the Vikings have set the bar high for the season, according to senior fullback Josh Chin. They hope to move up in the standings after placing as the 26th seed for the Division II North last season.
The team prepared for the season by completing drills and viewing scrimmage films, according to junior linebacker Tom Ames.
“There are videos of our scrimmages during practice and we go over them and correct them,” Ames said.
During practice, the 19 returning players teach the new players new in-game strategies for offense and defense, according to junior wide receiver Manny Cervantes.
“I think we’re going to do really well because the senior players know what they are doing,” Cervantes said. “They are all teaching the younger players new tricks, tips and tactics.”
Cervantes feels confident that the abilities of the team will lead them to a successful season.
“I think we have a good squad this year because the seniors have a lot of skill,” Cervantes said.
Head coach Earl Hansen believes that, through hard work, the team can maintain its standings and win CCS this season.
“We are preparing the team very hard and well,” Hansen said. “I think we will do great.”
The Vikings will play their next home game tomorrow, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. against Archbishop Mitty.
