Students and staff will participate in the first Tutorial tomorrow at 1:50 p.m. after their sixth period classes. Tutorial is a weekly feature built into the new schedule to allow students to speak with their teachers and receive extra help.
The first Tutorial will serve as an informational period. Students will remain with their 6th period teachers and discuss how to take advantage of the opportunity for structured faculty-student connection, one of the priorities Principal Phil Winston expressed for this school year in a question and answer session with Voice reporters today.
“Tutorial is an opportunity that’s been built into your day for you to access teachers in a way that’s helpful to you,” Winston said.
Following Thursday’s initial introduction, students will be able to choose where to spend Tutorial each week based on the subject or teacher they need more time with. Sixth period teachers will take attendance at the beginning of Tutorial. After this point, students will be able to use their student body cards to check in electronically at a Tutorial location of their choice, where they must remain for the rest of that period.
Students with a 6th period prep received slips assigning them to a Tutorial room with a teacher who also has a 6th period prep.
Parents received an email from Winston on Tuesday with information about the first Tutorial and a link to the list of frequently asked questions about the period. Students received a similar message from Assistant Principal Kim Diorio.
Winston emphasized that Tutorial, while mandatory, is meant to be helpful and may undergo changes to best serve students.
“I would expect that you as a student body provide some feedback,” Winston said. “There is some love that needs to be given there.”
The district distributed an email address, [email protected], for comments, questions and feedback regarding the weekly Tutorial.
