Meg Hine and Chloe Chen recap the week of April 19-23. Below is a complete transcript of the above podcast.
Hine: Hi Paly, this is Meg Hine and Chloe Chen of The Paly Voice, bringing you the latest news from campus for the week of April 19 – 23.
Chen: Some of the half dozen Palo Alto High School students stranded in Europe have scheduled flights home, after volcanic eruptions in Iceland forced mass flight cancellations. While the students’ absences will be excused by the school, it is unclear whether the state will do the same.
Hine: In its last Santa Clara Valley Athletic League home meet of the season, the boys’ varsity swimming team defeated Saratoga High School, 115-68, on Wednesday, sending its seniors off with a ceremony, gifts, and a victory.
Chen: In other sports news, girls’ track and field lost to Gunn 74-52, while boys’ track and field beat Gunn 72-54. Golf tied Gunn in the final regular season match which allowed them to clinch a 2nd place league finish.
Hine: Boys’ lacrosse defeated Leland 8-2 and baseball won their 14th straight game 7-3 against Monta Vista. Softball fell to Los Gatos 1-0 with the only run scored in the 1st inning and finally, girls’ lacrosse defeated Saratoga 17-7.
Chen: On March 22, the California state Assembly passed a bill that, if signed by Gov. Schwarzenegger, would impose a new tobacco-smoking ordinance in state beaches and parks, according to bill’s text. Last year, on May 14, the state Senate voted 21-14 to pass the law, and State Sen. Joe Simitian voted in favor of the bill.
Hine: The deadline for Calliope’s contest is April 25th. Students of all grades may submit their short stories or poetry by email to [email protected] or to room 202. Additionally, the winter issue of Calliope is still on sale for $4.
Chen: Students will be able to find out information on a variety of community service opportunities at the annual Paly community service fair. The fair will be held on April 28 at lunch in the quad.
