Assistant Principal Todd Feinberg is resigning from his position in the Paly administration effective June 30.
Feinberg declined to give many specific reasons for his decision to move on, but said, “It’s difficult to live in a district and be assistant principal in charge of discipline at a school in the same district.”
Feinberg said that his decision to resign is related to Principal Jacqueline McEvoy’s resignation, which she announced on Jan. 22.
“I really enjoyed working with [McEvoy], and if she were staying here I might be as well,” Feinberg said.
Feinberg, a Paly graduate himself, was most well known for his position as the assistant principal. However, he also served as the de facto instructional supervisor of the Special Education department.
Feinberg’s tenure as assistant principal at Paly was Feinberg’s first administrative job at the high school level. Although he is not sure where he will be working next, he said he has applied to several administrative positions at middle schools. Feinberg said that he tends to enjoy the administrative atmosphere better at middle schools than at high schools, but declined to give specific examples.
Feinberg became a part of Principal McEvoy’s administrative staff on July 1, 2008, and served with Assistant Principals Jerry Berkson and Kim Diorio.
Feinberg said he has many fond memories of his time at Paly.
“Working with everyone in the administration has been a positive and worthwhile experience,” he said. “I’m really proud of the work the administration has done during my tenure here at Paly; I think kids are safer at school and more prepared for their careers.”
Feinberg also enjoyed many of the perks unique to being an administrator at a school where he was once a student.
“I enjoyed being able to call [chemistry teacher] Ms. Lawrence ‘Kathy,'” Feinberg said. “I also liked the InFocus segment me and Mr. Berkson did for April Fool’s last year.”
Many students and coworkers will miss Feinberg’s presence at the school.
“It’s a great loss to the Paly community,” said Student Activities Director Kindel Launer. “I wish him all the best in his future endeavors and I know he will be wildly successful.”
Assistant Principal Jerry Berkson echoed Launer’s sentiment.
“I enjoyed working with him and he did a great job with special education,” Berkson said.
Feinberg’s contributions to the Special Education department will be especially missed.
“I think he has done an excellent job as our interim instructional supervisor in view of the fact that he was also an assistant principal,” said Mary Ellen Bena, secretary for Special Education. “He has an exceptional skill in working with young kids, and the students in this department are going to miss him.”
Some of the administration’s actions during Feinberg’s tenure at Paly were controversial. Most notable among these was the disciplinary response to egg wars in October, which some students felt was overly harsh.
Feinberg is the second member of the current administration to resign this year. As of yet, there is no information as to who will replace him or Principal McEvoy. Berkson and Diorio plan to remain at Paly.
