The Palo Alto Visual Arts Institute plans to dazzle viewers with images taken live from the Winter Olympics as part of a presentation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Haymarket Theater.
Aptly titled “Images from Vancouver,” the program will begin with two professional photographers, Don Feria and Nhat Meyer, along with journalist Elliott Almond of the San Jose Mercury News, presenting images they captured at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, according to the Palo Alto Visual Arts .
“We’ll be showing some work and talking about the pictures we made, and the backstories behind making them,” Feria said.
A panel discussion with opening statements by local Olympians will then commence, centering around issues of sports photography and journalism.
Paly English teacher Kindel Launer, who is helping to promote the event, said that the discussion is geared toward both adults and students.
“It’s a great look at what’s behind the scenes, what it would be like to be a photo journalist at the Winter Olympics,” Launer said.
The host for the night, the Palo Alto Visual Arts Institute, specializes in teaching the art of photography.
“It’s directed towards both young people and folks out of school to explore visual arts,” Launer said. “There are some really cool photojournalists and artists who are involved with the institute.”
General admission costs $10, while students get in for free. Tickets are both on sale now on the PAVA Web site and available at the door.
