Theater presents Shakespeare classic

A Midsummer Night’s Dream, opens in Haymarket theater this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The play has three groups of characters that end up interacting throughout the course of the play, according to theater director Kathleen Woods.

While the play’s script is often changed, Woods decided to stay true to the traditional script.

“We are sticking to the traditional script, but rather than setting it in the Elizabethan time, I have set in Victorian time,” Woods said.
“That is still far enough away from modern audience [that] it is still genuine.”

This play was chosen for a variety of reasons, according to Woods.

“Well, I love it,” Woods said. “It offers so many different acting opportunities and it is just a great way to introduce high school students to Shakespeare to both performers and audience members.”

In terms of the setting itself, Woods describes it as breathtaking.

“It is visually very rich and there are some modern things in there,” Woods said.

The audience can expect to see a lot of comical scenes, according to Woods.

“You get to see someone turned into an ass, so that’s pretty funny,” Woods said.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling 329-3710 Ext 7245. Performances are on March 5, 6, and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and March 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $7 for students and seniors and $10 for adults.
