VoiceCast: Weekly Update (January 29, 2010)

Cee-Ning Wong and Regina Wang recap the week of Jan. 25-29. Below is a complete transcript of the above podcast.

Cee-Ning: Hi Paly, this is Cee-Ning Wong and Regina Wang of The Paly Voice, bringing you the latest news from the Paly campus for the week of Jan. 25-29.

Regina: On Jan. 22, Paly principal Jacqueline McEvoy sent a resignation e-mail to the Paly community. The Palo Alto Unified School District will hold meetings in February to gather input from community members before selecting a replacement for McEvoy.

Cee-Ning: Though Gunn High School students planned to hold an anti-protest on Friday morning in defiance of Westboro Baptist Church leader Fred Phelps’ announcement that his group of anti-Semitic and anti-gay activists would picket in front of the school, the Gunn administration decided that non-response is the better reaction. School started at 8:30 a.m., half an hour later than the normal schedule, so that as few students as possible would have to be on campus during the WBC demonstration.

Regina: Palo Alto High School alumni are contributing to relief efforts for victims of the disastrous earthquakes that struck Haiti on Jan. 12, and Jan. 20, 2009, Paly graduates and former Voice members Michael Bloch and Amin Ronaghi have started online social networking groups for their colleges on Facebook.com to raise awareness for the crisis in Haiti.

Cee-Ning: Paly Environmental Initiative kicked off its Earth Week activities by setting up a lunchtime raffle station and shoe drive. Throughout the week, students wrote New Year’s environmental resolutions and submitted them to a raffle for a chance to win a high-speed ride in a Tesla convertible.

Regina: The girls’ soccer team (6-5-1, 3-3) dominated the Homestead Wildcats in a league match, 3-1, on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Paly.

Cee-Ning: Paly senior Lynnelle Ye will travel to Washington, D.C. to present a research project, after Intel named her a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search on Wednesday.

Regina: This has been Cee-Ning Wong and Regina Wang of The Paly Voice. If you have any news that you think we might have missed, e-mail us at [email protected].
