The deadline for submitting articles to Paly’s new publication, the Get Involved! community service magazine, has been extended from Dec. 18 to Jan. 8, according to Career Adviser Christina Owen.
Owen is compiling a magazine of student volunteer experiences, which she hopes will bring positive energy to the Paly community.
“Inspiration came to me during Egg Wars,” she said. “I got tired of watching negative publicity of our students. Most of them are trying to do good things and giving back. Our students are doing positive things so we should focus on the good, focus on the positive.”
Additionally, Owen wants to give all students the opportunity to write about their community service involvement.
“No matter what they do, they can share their experience,” she said.
Owen encourages students to partake in community service because the wide scope of activities ensures that there is something for everyone.
“There’s no competition with community service, everyone can do it,” she said.
To further this cause, Owen hopes the Get Involved! magazine will spread awareness of different volunteer opportunities. In addition to student articles, there is a chart of different activities categorized by area included in the publication, she added.
Owen found community service as an outlet for herself when she was a high school ((student)) going through a difficult phase in her life. The personal stories that have inspired her as well as what she hopes will inspire others can be found on her blog.
The publication is to be published by spring 2010, according to Owen.
