Students are preparing for competitions and rallies in this year’s Spirit Week, which will take place Oct. 26 through Oct. 30.
Each class has decided on a theme. The seniors’ theme is money, juniors will follow a “Go Bananas” jungle theme, sophomores are “super-powered” and freshmen are construction workers.
“I am definitely psyched about Spirit Week,” senior Tessa Goble said. “It’s really fun comparing all the costumes and dressing up.”
The week will start off with a lunchtime rally on Monday, and the classes will compete in multiple activities and contests to determine which class is the most spirited.
“I think Spirit Week is a great time for people to express themselves,” sophomore Heather Gaya said. “My favorite part are the rallies.”
As in previous years, this year’s point system will be based on participation and the class with the best cheers. However, unsportsmanlike behavior and inappropriate cheers, as well as unsatisfactory class cleanliness, will result in point deduction. The class with the dirtiest section of the quad will have points docked off.
“Each grade can get points for cheers, activities and participation, with negative points for not cleaning up class bleachers and any inappropriate cheers,” senior spirit commissioner Gracie Dulik said. “The spirit dances and floats are worth major points in addition to those, so each class needs to make sure their dances and floats are great.”
Despite a couple of new events, the activities will remain traditionally the same as previous years.
“All I can say right now is that there are going to be many of the classic activities from every year as well as a few surprises,” Dulik said.
Students from every grade are preparing for an intense Spirit Week.
“This year, I’m going to go full-out on every outfit of the week,” junior Katerina Peterson said. “I’ll do whatever I can to improve from last year. We can’t lose to underclassmen again.”
This year’s Homecoming football game will be against Los Gatos High school on Friday, Oct. 30. There will be multiple activities and games, such as class dances, floats and cheers before the game. The junior varsity game will begin at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
“Hopefully Spirit Week will be just as much fun as last year, and tons of Paly kids will get involved and show off their school spirit,” Dulik said.
