Alert: Suspected bike thieves apprehended

Two suspected bike thieves will face charges after Palo Alto High School campus supervisors spotted them trespassing on campus.

The two men were walking when they were approached by supervisors Scott Reese and Ernesto Cruz. The men said they were at Paly for a construction job, but were unable to produce identification, at which point Reese and Cruz involved assistant principal Jerry Berkson, Berkson said.

“The guys said they left their license plate in the car, but when they didn’t come back, Scott [Reese] called the police,” Berkson said.

One of the suspects got into a truck, and Reese recorded the license plate and began following the vehicle as it moved toward Stanford, Reese said. A Stanford sheriff stopped the two men, and they were charged with trespassing and possession of burglary tools, according to Reese.

“We followed them across the street, and the police got them inside Stanford campus,” Cruz said. “It was obvious they were stealing bikes.”

The suspect’s truck contained lock cutters, pry bars, and other tools in addition to two bikes from Stanford campus, according to Cruz.

More information to come soon.
