Palo Alto Emergency Services arrived on Paly’s campus during the end of advisory on Wednesday in response to a 911 call from the library concerning medical attention for an unidentified adult.
Assistant principal Jerry Berkson declined to comment on the medical status of the staff member, but said that everything went smoothly.
“A person went ill with an unspecified illness,” Berkson said. “911 was called, the staff acted according to the emergency response plan which consists of clearing the way for the ambulance, letting everything come by and making sure that opening over there is actually open. The firemen and paramedics did their thing and we’ll all move on with our lives.”
Librarian Rachel Kellerman agreed with Berkson, praising the speed of the response from students, the staff and the emergency personnel.
“All the emergency procedures worked well,” Kellerman said. “911 arrived quickly, and the nurse was here immediately. The students were great. We were amazed at 911.”
According to Berkson, students reacted well to the request to clear the quad, though they lingered around the library even into the beginning of third period.
“We had a problem getting students back to class,” Berkson said.
According to Berkson, the emergency procedures were carried out immediately, though today’s incident highlighted one area for improvement.
“I thought it [the procedure] was a well-oiled machine. It went well. We need to work on having a clear lane for maintenance to come by, but that is more of a conversation to be had with the fire department.”
