The Associated Student Body has canceled plans for Paly’s second Spirit Week or “Spring Fever,” according to Student Activities Director Allison Mullins.

The cancellation is a result of insufficient timing and lack of approval from the Ed Council, Mullins said.

In order to have followed through with Spring Fever, ASB needed approval from the administration and the Ed Council. While ASB Spirit Commissioners junior Olivia Diamond and senior Lucy McComas had many ideas for dress-up themes and lunch activities, the Ed Council disapproved of several proposals.

According to Mullins, the Ed Council thought some ideas such as the “hillbillies and country club members” dress-up theme could be controversial. Mullins said that Diamond and McComas had difficulty coming up with enough themes “that aren’t going to be seen as trying to create this controversy between actual groups of people that exist.”

“When you think about regular Spirit Week, [there are themes] like ‘salad dressing,'” Mullins said. “Everybody’s dressing the same way, but differently…pitting Caesar against thousand island dressing; some people just like one over the other. It’s not people. It’s not personal.”
