ODFL fundraiser comes to Paly

One dollar from each Paly student is all it takes to build a school in Indonesia.

This idea is the basis of a fundraiser that senior Jess Brooks and junior Erika Ji have organized to raise money for the charity organization One Dollar For Life this week.

On Thursday, collection boxes were delivered to fourth period classrooms.

Students can place their donations in these boxes until April 9, when the boxes will be recollected. All donations will go to building a high school in Indonesia, according to Brooks.

Founded by Los Altos High School in 2006, ODFL is a non-profit organization that addresses third world poverty and encourages American teenagers to improve the world. Money raised for the organization will fund small infrastructure projects that have the potential to improve self-sustainability, according to the ODFL Web site.

This is the first time that such a fundraiser has been held at Paly, according to Brooks. However, Brooks’ interest in ODFL began in her sophomore year. She had trouble finding a person to co-head the fundraiser until Ji expressed interest.

“I heard about it [ODFL] sophomore year,” Brooks said. “I was planning to run it last year…It was hard to find people to do it with.”

Ji agrees that some issues prevented the ODFL fundraiser from occurring last year.

“We were interested in doing it last year, but we didn’t really have enough time to do it,” Ji said. “There wasn’t enough time to communicate.”

Ji, the Paly Key Club president, was further motivated to host ODFL after the Palo Alto Kiwanis Club, which sponsors Key Club, suggested the ODFL fundraiser to her earlier this year.

“The Palo Alto Kiwanis Club’s Lt. Gov. Jim Stinger suggested that Key Club [start] One Dollar for Life this year, and then we contacted people and we got together,” Ji said.

ODFL was originally scheduled to take place during the first week of March, but was postponed until April in order for Brooks and Ji to better publicize the event, according to Ji.

Brooks hopes that Paly students will give whatever possible to the cause.

“We expect to raise at least $1 per Paly student,” Brooks said. “We’re hoping Paly students will donate as much as they can.”

Ji has similar expectations for the fundraiser’s success.

“I’m hoping we can spread a positive message about being able to come together as a community to try to help others,” Ji said. “We’re hoping to be able to help build a school in Indonesia and we hope to give them [the Indonesian students] a better future.”
