Police detain man at Town and Country

Police arrested a man for assault of a security guard, resisting arrest, and public intoxication at the Town and Country parking lot at approximately 1:30 p.m. today, according to Sgt. Rebbecca Phillips of the Palo Alto Police Department.

“He was lying next to Honeys and Heroes with a beer; at first we thought he was dead,” said sophomore John Brunett, who witnessed the arrest.

Security guard Mary Patterson said the man was drunk and attempted to hit a Town and Country security officer, at which point the police were notified.

“When the police saw him, they grabbed him and he resisted attack,” Patterson said. “He tried to punch the police and it took four men to take him down.”

Palo Alto resident Michelle Compton also witnessed the arrest.

“These types of events make us see how blessed and lucky we are to have family and friends around to take care of us,” Compton said.

California Penal Code Section 647 states that any drunk person who presents a danger to himself or others or interferes with the free use of any street, sidewalk, or other public way can be detained by the police.
