Paly construction plans presented to community

The Paly facilities committee is preparing to present the proposed construction plans to the school board after having met with Paly alumni, parents, and other community members on Thursday evening in the English Resource Center.

Architect Erwin Lee made a presentation explaining the attendees.

A recent version of the plan included a new theater attached to the 100 building. However, the newest version of the plan includes renovations of the 100 building and a theater as independent projects.

“The theater is now separate from building 100,” Lee said. “It is a separate project so one doesn’t depend on the other.”

According to Lee, this plan for the theater closely follows the plan suggested by the bond measure.

“One [plan] had the whole 100 building gutted…and attached to the theater,” Lee said. We would have to relocate the students in the 100 building to do that…This [the current plan] is more in line with what was originally intended.”

The current estimate for the cost of the construction at Paly well exceeds the $100 million allotted to the project by a bond voted on [[by the committee]] last year.

“The estimate is $178 million,” Lee said. “That’s more than we have.”

Principal Jacqueline McEvoy hopes that a new classroom building and the new media arts building will also move into the next stages of planning shortly.

“The classrooms and media arts will go into design this spring; that’s what we’re hoping,” McEvoy said.

According to McEvoy, part of the small building between the 200 and 300 buildings will become a lecture hall.

“There’s a video production studio and next to it is a black box which used to be a lecture hall,” McEvoy said. “One side [of the building] is going to be a lecture hall and one side will be a black box theater.

Lee also discussed the possibility of moving the corporation yard at Paly to make room for better tennis courts and outdoor learning spaces. McEvoy added that such a project is currently unfunded.

“The board would have to allocate money to do that,” McEvoy said.

According to Lee, plans have also been made to build new science classrooms.

“We will convert existing offices to additional science space,” Lee said.

According to Lee, it is likely that temporary classrooms will be erected to replace buildings under construction.

“Only so much of the campus can be under construction without being an inconvenience to the functioning of the site,” Lee said. “There’s a good chance that relocatables will be put in the quad while some of these projects go on.”

The current plan is subject to change, according to Lee.

“This plan can evolve over time,” Lee said. “Once projects are completed, we’ll revisit the plan to make sure projects are still relevant.”

The plans will be presented to the school board for final approval on March 17.
