Voicecast: Weekly update (March 13, 2009)

Anna Bastidas and Vienna Tran of The Paly Voice recap the week of March 6 to March 13, 2009.

The following is a complete transcript of the above podcast.

Bastidas: Hi Paly, this is Anna Bastidas and Vienna Tran of The Paly Voice bringing you the latest news from the Paly campus for the week of March 6 to March 13 in our weekly update.

Tran: In sports new, varsity lacrosse beat Woodside, 12-0, in their first league game of the season.

Bastidas: The tennis team’s weekend in Fresno was very successful. After spending two days in the sun, the team won first place at the California High School Boys’ Tennis Classic. There were 108 teams eager to take home the same title. Also this week, the tennis team beat Lynbrook, 6-1, on Tuesday. Congratulations, guys! It certainly looks like you are going to have a successful season.

Tran: Most spring sports are off to a good start, but Paly’s baseball team seems to be struggling. The team is currently 0 and 7, after losing to Los Gatos, 10-6, on Wednesday. The team will have another chance to beat the Wildcats on Friday in an away game at 3:30 p.m. The softball team won its game on Wednesday, 10-0, against Notre Dame.

Check the schedules online for times and locations for next week’s sport events.

Bastidas: In the area of academia, it is important to note that AP Test registration fee has been increased to $110 per test. Normal registration runs through March 31. But be sure to register on time because late registration costs $150.

Tran: The Palo Alto Drug Alcohol Community Collaborative will accept 20 volunteers within the next two weeks to discuss next years policies. Interested freshmen, sophomores, and juniors can sign up with Susan Schultz in the guidance office. Volunteers will receive community service for attending the monthly meetings.

Bastidas: The school board’s chief business officer presented a budget plan for the 2009-2010 school year at Tuesday’s meeting. The budget will be voted on at the March 24 meeting.

Tran: Congratulations to the Concert choir, Spectrum singers and Madrigals, all three of whom brought back Gold Awards, which recognize their high scores in the competitions in last weekend’s Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim. Congratulations to seniors Jovan and Joerelle Bennet who won the Maestro Award for best soloists for performing a spiritual choral song called ‘Ain’t Got Time to Die.’ The choirs are now training for the Golden State Choral Competition, which takes place in May.

Tran: After three days of visits, the WASC accreditation team announced Wednesday that they will announce their decision in May.

Bastidas: However, Thursday morning, the morning after this was announced, the senior class greeted students with the first prank of the year of 2009 — covering the Quad’s trees in toilet paper, sticking plastic forks in the grass and hoisting a trash can into a tree.

Tran: This was Anna Bastidas and Vienna Tran for The Paly Voice. If you have any news that you think we might miss, email us at [email protected]. Tune in next week for the latest news.
