ODFL fundraiser postponed until April

The One Dollar for Life fundraiser, originally scheduled for the first week of March, will be postponed until April so that the organizers can have more time to publicize the event, according to fundraiser organizers.

According to senior fundraiser organizer senior Jess Brooks, a member of the ODFL organization suggested that the Paly organizers should directly contact teachers before hosting the fundraiser.

“We haven’t been able to speak directly with all of the teachers,” Brooks said. “We’ve only sent out e-mails. The One Dollar for Life lady is a teacher, and she said that a lot of teachers don’t check their e-mails regularly, so she suggested that we postpone the event until we had a chance to speak with the teachers.”

According to its Web site, ODFL was founded to allow teenagers to help address third world poverty. The fundraised money will be used to fund low-cost projects like schools, irrigation systems and vaccinations.

“It’s a simple fundraiser designed to be run the same way anywhere,” Brooks said. “The idea is a fundraiser in box. They’ve had people in other states run the fundraiser and the basic idea is the same everywhere.”

At Paly, the goal is to involve every student in the process.

“I just want to get $1 per student,” Brooks said. “I think this is possible, especially at Paly, so [the goal is] $1800. I guess our secondary goal is to prove to people that we can really make a difference.”

Brooks first heard about ODFL from her mother, who attends the same church as the ODFL founder’s family. Because most schools run the fundraiser through the Key Club, Brooks discussed the idea with junior Key Club President Erika Ji.

“Jess and I met with Mr. [Robert] Freeman, who is I believe the founder for One Dollar For Life, and he talked to us about the idea,” Ji said. “They have already had a lot of success. I believe that Jordan [Middle School] bought two cows to provide people with milk.”

Ji has found the Paly faculty and staff very supportive when she has approached them for help.

“We’re working with the Key Club, and our teacher sponsor [InFocus adviser] Mr. McNulty, as well as Mr. Freeman from One Dollar For Life,” Ji said. “We’ve also been working with the school administration: [Student Activities Director] Ms. [Allye] Mullins and [Assistant Principal] Mr. [Jerry] Berkson have helped a lot.”

Now, Brooks and Ji hope to involve or at least inform the entire staff about the fundraiser.

“Teachers don’t have meetings all together, so we plan to meet with department heads and have them make announcements during department meetings,” Brooks said. “We will also put letters and flyers in mailboxes for all the teachers.”

Right now, the fundraiser is tentatively planned for the first week of April.
