Paly jazz band, jazz ensemble to perform with Jordan jazz band

The Paly jazz ensemble and jazz band will perform their annual concert with the Jordan Middle School jazz band at 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the Haymarket Theater.

Band director Jeff Willner says the Paly jazz ensemble will start the concert. The Jordan jazz band will perform next and the Paly jazz band will follow. Finally, the three bands will play one piece together, “When the Saints Go Marching In.” According to Willner, the arrangement includes a “Sing Sing Sing” beat.

“It will be rollicking with a giant 50-member band,” Willner said.

Willner is enthusiastic about the program, which will include some popular songs.

“Some tunes that people might recognize are ‘You’d be so Nice to Come Home To’ by Cole Porter, ‘Satin Doll’ by Duke Ellington, and ‘Granada Smoothie’ [by Stan Kenton],” Willner said.

Senior jazz band member Garrett Morton thinks jazz fans will enjoy the concert.

“We play good jazz tunes,” Morton said. “It will be a lot of fun.”

Willner agrees that the concert will be a success.

“The jazz band is always good,” Willner said. “There will be really good music, live, and high school people just like yourselves doing amazing things. You can even yell at appropriate times. It’s high quality, entertaining, and fun.”

According to Morton, admission is free.
