Second Brown Bag to premiere next week

Students will perform “The Ballad of the Mad Angus Bruce,” in the second Brown Bag Lunch Show of the year on Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Haymarket Theater.

Senior Ian Dunbar wrote and is directing the comedic one-act. According to Dunbar, the play tells the story of a group of inmates in a mental hospital.

“The show takes place in a loony ward,” Dunbar said. “The play’s about the mad Angus Bruce and his friends in the ‘loony bin’ trying to escape.”

Characters in the one act include a southern war veteran, a crazy Scot, and the warden of the “loony bin.”

Dunbar’s one-act started as a creative writing project.

“I wrote the first half [of the play] as a dialogue for Creative Writing,” Dunbar said. “I thought ‘I should write about a crazy person talking to himself.’ Someone else took that idea so I wrote about a crazy person talking to a warden.”

Senior Kelsey Swezey, a cast member, says she has enjoyed participating in the show so far.

“Ian Dunbar has been a great director,” Swezey said. “His [Dunbar’s] play is amazing. It’s kooky and crazy and funny.”

Students who bring friends to see “The Ballad of the Mad Angus Bruce” will get a free concession at the upcoming performances of Fiddler on the Roof in April.

Swezey is confident that Paly students will enjoy the one-act.

“I’m excited to see how people react,” Swezey said. “I think they will love it. … I think it will show how much fun we’re having.”
