Palo Alto Youth Council to host band night

In order to raise money for an upcoming environmental fair, the Palo Alto Youth Council will hold a band night from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Mitchell Park Community Center.

Student bands, including Furious George and Corner Street Light from Paly and the Daybreakers, will perform.

The PAYC will use the money raised from band night to buy prizes and environmentally friendly products for its environmental fair in April, which the council hopes will raise awareness on more successful ways to approach environmentalism, according to sophomore council member Chloe Chen.

“Though there are already a lot of awareness campaigns for environmental activism, we’re going to focus on little things, like composting, that aren’t really focused on by other campaigns,” Chen said. “This will help people feel like they can actually do something to help the environment.”

The council indicated that Saturday’s band night will also be a good opportunity to raise interest in the council and its causes.

Because the bands have a large fan base at Paly and Gunn, council members are optimistic about the event, said junior council member Ruhi Sikri.

“We hope there’ll be a large turnout,” Sikri said. “We tried to pick bands which we knew would attract people from Gunn or Paly which most people would enjoy.”

Council members want students to come to the event and enjoy themselves.

“Even if you don’t care about the topics, it’s a chance to enjoy the bands and hang out with people from different schools,” Sikri said. “It’ll be fun.”

Junior Shawn Barry, a singer for Furious George, is confident that students will enjoy the concert.

“I’m really excited about our set for this show,” Barry said. “The music is going to be pretty awesome. Corner Street Light always busts out for an awesome show. We [Furious George] have been practicing a lot, so I’m pretty confident we will be on our A-game as well. Concerts like this don’t come along every weekend.”

Each band will play for 45 minutes to an hour. Tickets are $4 at the door, and PAYC will also sell food and drinks at the event. The Mitchell Park Community Center is located at 3800 Middlefield Rd.
