Winter Formal proceeds to benefit workers in Peru

Paly’s 2008 Winter Formal Dance, featuring the theme of “FantaSEA for Freedom in Peru,” will take place this Friday, Dec. 12.

Proceeds from the dance will go to the Let’s Help Each Other organization, which is funded by the Global Fund for Children, according to the GFC Web site.

LHEO is a non-profit organization dedicated to social activity that supports domestic workers, specifically women, in Peru. LHEO hopes to improve workers’ education and status, and reclassify their identity as seen by others through promoting social change, according to LHEO’s Web site.

The GFC is a non-profit organization which has given more than 1,000 grants to over 60 countries valuing more than $7.5 million, according to the GFC Web site.

The dance will be in the big gym from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Students are expected to dress in a semi-formal manner.

“We want students to look nice, just not as nice as prom,” said senior Becky Byler, co-president of the New Global Citizens club that is hosting the dance.

Boys are expected to wear collared shirts and slacks, and girls are expected to wear dresses.

Before the dance, students will watch a new video created by ASB that reinforces appropriate dance behavior, according to Byler.

Tickets are available at The Viking Shoppe, on the quad this week, or in the auditor’s office, for $10 with an ASB card and $15 without. Tickets will not be available at the dance and doors will close at 8:30 p.m.
