Paly’s Jewish Student Union Club (JSU) hosted its first concert of Jewish music, which featured a performance by Jewish music group Trudaism, at lunch today on the quad.
Trudaism consists of members Yehuda De Sa, a Paly graduate, and Phineas Adam, a former Paly student. Shmuel Braun, who works with several JSU clubs at schools throughout the Bay Area, also performed alongside De Sa and Adam.
Senior Paly JSU President Sarah Stone plans to add a musical focus to the club.
“We have a meeting every Wednesday, where people can play music; people bring their guitars, and we play Jewish music,” Stone said.
Much of Trudaism’s music is inspired by teachings from the Torah, according to De Sa.
“I draw a lot of my inspiration from the teachings of King David, the Psalms,” De Sa said. “I’m pretty religious; I spend about four hours learning the Torah every day.”
The group’s inspiration for its name and music also comes from what De Sa calls “true Judaism.”
“I just practice true Judaism, what it says in the book,” De Sa said. “It’s like unity — no need to have qualifiers or labels. The truth doesn’t have a qualifier. The truth stands on its own.”
According to Stone, JSU hopes to host more performances in the next couple of months.
Braun looks forward to future performances at Paly and other Bay Area schools.
“If this goes over well, we could bring in different acts and musical styles, maybe once every couple of months or so,” Braun said.
