Paly choir to perform religious music at Stanford

The Paly Concert Choir will perform a concert of religious music from 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, at Stanford Memorial Church.

Sunday’s concert is part of the Compline series at Stanford. The Web site of the Office for Religious Life at Stanford University describes Compline as “a reflective 30-minute service of hymns and chant sung in the tranquil candlelit ambiance of Memorial Church. All religious and non-religious backgrounds welcome.”

The choir will sing under the direction of Michael Najar, Paly’s choir teacher and director.

The concert will consist of music from many different religions, according to junior Arya Saljooqi, a member of Paly’s Concert Choir.

The choir will sing a series of pieces including a Jewish song called “Hine Ma Tov” and a Christian prayer called “Ubi Caritas.” Madrigals, which is the most advanced choral group, will sing “Sicut Cervus” by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Spectrum choir, the advanced girls’ choir group, will sing “Ave Maria.”

According to sophomore choir member Teddi Kalb, the soloists in the concert volunteered for solo parts.

The Paly choir performs at Memorial Church every fall and spring, according to senior choir member Sai Boddupalli.

Boddupalli has performed at the chapel twice a year since his sophomore year. He is eager to perform at Stanford Memorial Chapel with the Paly Choir for a fifth time.

“What I’m most looking forward to is singing at Stanford Memorial Chapel yet again because it’s such a gorgeous environment and setting,” Boddupalli said. “The acoustics are unreal.”

The next performance in the Compline concert series will be at 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Stanford Memorial Church.

Editor’s note: Junior Arya Saljooqi is a member of Paly’s Concert Choir, not Paly’s Advanced Choir.
