Paly prepares for Spirit Week

The school is teeming with excitement for this year’s Spirit Week, which will be held Oct. 20 through Oct. 24.

The week will start off with a lunchtime rally on Monday, during which the classes will compete in an array of activities and contests to determine which class is the most spirited. Rallies will continue throughout the rest of the week.

According to junior ASB spirit commissioner Olivia Diamond, ASB has been preparing for Spirit Week since the previous school year. During June, ASB members began to create new cheers, dances, posters, and activities in order to make this the best Spirit Week ever.

“Spirit Week preparation is a huge consumption of time for the month prior to Spirit Week, what with posters, bulletins, T-shirts, class spirit dances, cheers and activities,” Diamond said.

ASB has developed several new activities for lunchtime rallies.

“New activities include, but are not limited to, a tricycle relay race, points daily for class cheers, a scavenger hunt within the class, and teacher participation in some activities,” Diamond said.

In addition to participating in new activities, the classes will compete in traditional lunchtime rally activities.

“[These activities will be] eating competitions, ping pong toss, dress competition, box competition, musical chairs, tug of war, hula hoop and more,” Diamond said.

These contests will be scored to establish the winning class. For each activity or relay the class is chosen as the winner receives a certain amount of points. The class with the most points at the end of spirit week wins. Though classes can gain points, they can also lose points for negative behavior and inappropriate chants throughout the rest of the week.

Festivities will continue with lunchtime rallies for the entire week, and the traditional morning rally on Thursday. Attendance is important because the Associated Student Body will count the number of people at the rally in order to award points.

“[The] morning rally is all cheers and you get a free breakfast,” Diamond said.

An after-school rally will be held on Friday, during which the classes will display their floats and class dances. According to Diamond, the rally will feature a tug of war game, hula hoop contests, class dances, and the presentation of each class’s float.

The Friday rally will be followed by the homecoming football game against Wilcox. JV will play at 5 p.m. while varsity will play at 7 p.m. The week will be capped off by the Las Vegas-themed Homecoming Dance on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Paly’s big gym

Class theme day of Spirit Week is set to occur on Monday, Oct. 24. Seniors will dress up as the 90s, juniors will dress up as 60s mod, sophomores will be lifeguards, and freshmen will dress up in beach attire.
