Freshmen to vote for class officers

Freshmen will be able to vote for their 2008-2009 class officers during advisory this Wednesday, Sept. 3.

The candidates, who are all running unopposed, are Ashley Swendseid for freshman class president, Hannah Park for vice president, and Jasmaer Sandhu for site council representative.

According to Student Activities Director Allison Mullins, freshmen interested in becoming class officers attended a candidate meeting during Freshman Orientation on Aug. 20. Freshmen had the opportunity to apply for candidacy until last Friday, Aug. 29.

Swendseid became interested in running for freshman class president after learning that there were no candidates at the time.

“I decided to take a shot,” Swenseid said. “I wouldn’t want the class of 2012 to go without a president.”

Swenseid is a member of Paly’s varsity cheer team and is excited for the upcoming school year.

“I would like everyone to feel welcome to Paly and to have a great year,” Swenseid said. “I’m excited to help organize Spirit Week and the freshman homecoming float.”

Park, a member of Paly’s JV water polo team, is running for freshman vice president to be more involved with Paly.

“I would help make spirit week more fun so the majority of the ninth graders would be excited and dress up,” Park said.

Sandhu is running for site council representative to make a positive impact on campus.

“I would give a voice to the freshmen in all the decisions made at the meetings,” Sandhu said. “My goal for this year is to make the transition for freshmen from middle to high school as easy as possible.”

ASB officers from other classes were elected last May, including ASB President senior Erik Klingbeil, Senior Class President Becky Byler, Junior Class President Ivan Zhou, and Sophomore Class President George Brown. A full list of elected ASB officers can be found at the ASB Web site, http://asb.paly.net/Officers.html.

ASB hopes to post results from the freshman elections after school on Wednesday, according to Mullins.
