Model Citizens Club to host fashion show for charity

The Paly Model Citizens Club will host its first runway fashion show on Saturday on the Paly quad to raise money for a village in Africa.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity for students and adults alike to enjoy themselves and support a great cause at the same time,” said Arianna Governatori, junior club president.

As stated on the club Website, http://www.modelcitizenclub.com/, the purpose of the club is “to use unconventional methods to raise money for charity.” The set-up for the show will consist of a runway on the gravel “X” on the Paly quad, where students will model clothes submitted by professional boutiques such as Romi, Vian Hunter, Cassis, In Her Shoes, and Nalej, as well as several original styles created by club members.

Student bands, including Poetic Edda and others, will play music in the area between the student center and the quad. In order to make the show more successful, the club has made it easy for people not interested in fashion to donate to the cause.

“There are lots of ways that people can donate,” junior club vice-president Jessie Kuo said. “You can buy a Model Citizens t-shirt, buy a ticket, or send your money through our website.”

The money will go toward the construction of a PlayPump in a poverty-stricken village in Arica. A PlayPump is a a device similar to a merry-go-round that helps to supply water to a village that otherwise has no plumbing system. While children play and spin the device, the energy is transferred to a pump, which then turns the dirty water from the ground into a clean and usable resource.

“A big part of the show is not just to pay for a PlayPump, but also to raise awareness of the “clean water issue” in third-world locations such as Africa,” Kuo said.

The show starts on at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Paly quad. Tickets cost $10 for students and $15 for adults. More information can also be found at the club Website.
